weekly reflections: half marathon training – week 1

This past week was the first week of my half marathon training. I am doing a 16 week program that I found fresh off of the interwebs… so it must be true! But in all seriousness, I spent a lot of time researching and comparing them based off of information I have learned from various runners, including larger runners who may do more intervals. I think the one I landed on should work.

This past week looked like this:

DayPlanActual
SundayRestRest
Monday2 Miles2 Miles
TuesdayRestRest with 1 mile easy walk
Wednesday2 Miles2 Miles w 1.5 mile easy walk
ThursdayRest or Cross-train, spin, walk30 min spin
FridayRest or Cross-train, spin, walk2.6 mile active walk
Saturday3 Miles3 Miles

It is really nice having such a structured plan. I have been pretty consistent for months with my activity and running, but I have never had anything this prescribed. Also, it if pushing me to get back on the bike, something I have been struggling to get myself back on for months.

Now my nutrition has been my nemesis lately. I feel okay with how I did this past week, food wise. Meal planning for the past year basically means we know what dinners are and lunches could be 1 of 3 possibilities based on what is in the house. This leads me to sometimes struggle with lunch, but am okay most days. I would classify myself as knowingly overeating on Monday and maybe another day. I am the classic eyes bigger than stomach type, but I also struggle not finishing my plate when that is the case. Second servings of dinner have also been getting to me lately. Again, I feel I had an okay week last week and definitely know it was better than some I have been having lately.

So what are my goals for this week?

  1. Accomplish my training schedule. This weeks mileage ups to 10 from last weeks 7. I am excited to get after it.
  2. Have planned snacking. Each day I need to preplan snacks so I don’t graze throughout the day on things I don’t need.
  3. 0 days eating until I am uncomfortable. This may sound silly to some, but when you have struggled with food for your entire life, this one is a real problem.

I don’t really have any profound thoughts today. The past week felt standard. Just plug along and try to stick to goals. There are so many things in life to stress about that I am trying to get this stuff into as much of a routine as possible. I don’t need any more anxiety.

I will say I have slowly improved my tolerance for running in the heat and humidity. Don’t get me wrong, I still hate it… I mean really really really hate it. And I still get super grumpy when hot and sweaty. But each run gets a bit more manageable. Each struggle is a little less due to the weather. So that is progress!

Have a great week, folks!
